This male choir, with members from all around Cork, rehearse every Thursday night 7:30 pm in The Boys’ National School, Carrigaline We look forward to a busy year ahead singing in competitions, at corporate events and other social and musical occasions. We would welcome any new members who would enjoy the challenge of this unique singing style.

The Polyphonics are always looking for new members. You must be able to sing in tune, but you do not need any prior experience. Neither do you have to be able to read music. New songs are learned from "teach-tapes" or more likely, teach CD's. These consist of the various music lines (Tenor, Lead, Baritone, or Bass) played separately so you can learn your line by ear.

Polyphonics Recruit New Musical Director

Determined to build on the great work done in recent years by the then Musical Directors Jack Coughlan and Dan O'Regan, which culminated in National Titles in 2007 and 2009, the Polyphonics are delighted to announce that they have aquired the services of Douglas Kelly as new Musical Director.

Douglas is a native of Cork. He started his musical journey at the age of 5 when he took up the Suzuki violen. At the age of 10 he moved onto the viola and by 12 he had traded up to the cello. He studied cello in the Cork School of Music until he was 17 and then studied privately with Gerda Marwood for several years. He currently has no plans to take up the double bass!!

An avid chamber musician, Douglas has attended festivals throughout Ireland, the U.K. and Italy. He is a member of the Bravura String WQuartet who are one of Ireland's most sought after wedding quartets.

Douglas' interest in singing started when he joined St. Finbarr's Boys Choir at the age og 9. He stayed in the choir for 3 years until his voice broke. In September of 2000 Douglas joined the Polyphonics which ignited his passion for barbershop music. Since then he has won several Irish National Barbershop Championship gold medals. He sings tenor with the male a capella quartet, The entertainers, who are the 2005 and 2006 champions. After leaving the Polyphonics he studied classical singing with Hilary Reynolds for three years. It is with great excitment that Douglas now returns to the Polyphonics as their new Musical Director.

When not involved with music, Douglas spends any time he hasd adjusting spines. He is a qualified Spinologist, having trained in Australia and Spain. His Spinology practice is in Blackrock in Cork. All spines welcome!!

Tenth win at Convention

A GREAT WIN

Over the weekend of the 2nd-4th October the 21st IABs National and International Convention took place at the Helix in Dublin. Once again the Polyphonics were crowned National Male Chorus Champions. Well done all. Especially to our musical director Jack Coughlan

In the begining....

Formed in 1980, the Polyphonics is one of the longest established barbershop choruses in Ireland. The group was formed when several members of the Passage West choir got together with Maurice Healy as Musical Director. From its inception, the chorus quickly earned a reputation for professional and entertaining performances. They performed at many prestigious events around Ireland including the Cork Jazz Festival, and the AIMS Choral Festival in New Ross. The Polyphonics have also appeared on RTE Television on a number of occasions. In the early years (before IABS was established) the chorus made regular guest appearances at the BABS conventions e.g. in 1984 at Warwick, in 1987 at Walsall, in 1988 at Harrogate and in 1989 at Bournemouth.
Between 1989, when IABS was formed, and 2007, the Polyphonics have won the Men’s Chorus National Championship on ten occasions (1989, 1993, 1994, 1995, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009). They also won the “National Jazz and Light Entertainment” Competition at the Cork International Choral Festival in 2006. Thus they are the most successful of all the male Irish barbershop choruses.
